Asher deGroot - Principal, Architect AIBC
Asher is an architect, a bread baker, a furniture builder, and a lover of football (soccer) and food. His construction and furniture building experience have made him adept at creating simple, beautiful environments and objects for his clients to experience and enjoy. Asher has always made his home on the west coast. His love for its waters, its mountains, its forests and its people, has led to a design sensibility that cares distinctly about place, and about creating spaces that are connected to their place, in form and material, and that will endure to tell a story about their inhabitants.
Prior to starting his own company Asher worked at award-winning firm, Michael Green Architecture for many years. While there he oversaw a host of different project types, working on educational buildings, restaurants, townhouses, industrial spaces, boutique shops and alpine clubs. He was a key member of the design team for the North Vancouver City Hall renovation project, which renovated an old library building into new offices, meeting rooms, and public counters for a range of civic services and public functions. The City Hall won the 2014 Governor Generals Medal for Architecture.
During his studies Asher continually moved eastward from Vancouver, finally ending up in Halifax to complete his Masters of Architecture. While studying he continued overseas for stints in Europe, Australia and Africa, getting a broad range of design and construction experience. Asher oversaw design and construction of a primary school in Sierra Leone, West Africa, learning from local building techniques to create a sensitive architectural response to local needs. A decade later, he remains involved there and the school is bringing some of the best education this tiny country has to offer.
In his heart Asher loves building and making things for people to enjoy–some enduring and some temporary. He is currently completing construction on a barn at his family property east of Vancouver that he hopes will last for generations.
Working with us
We believe that the process of design and construction can and should be as enriching to those who participate in it as the final design that is built for our clients. We work with clients on a wide range of projects, at many scales: residential, commercial, agricultural, interior design, or graphic design, for new construction and renovations.
True collaboration is critical to creating inspiring spaces. We seek to build relationship and trust with our clients from the beginning of a project. We want to get to know our clients so that our designs reflect who they are as human beings, their needs, their hopes, and their aspirations. We build a team of consultants and collaborators that share this vision and make the process of design and construction enjoyable and fulfilling.
We invest our heart and soul into creating spaces that suit our clients’ vision and needs, and that fit appropriately into their environments. This requires deep understanding of construction details, thoughtful choice of materials, and connection to natural and urban landscapes.
